The challenge

The Grade II listed mill had stood empty for over a decade. The council wanted a modern library and study space, but the building needed significant repair and every intervention had to respect its industrial character.

Our approach

We worked closely with conservation officers to repair rather than replace wherever possible, inserting new elements as clearly contemporary, reversible pieces within the historic shell.

  • Careful repair of original timber trusses and cast-iron columns
  • A freestanding timber mezzanine for quiet study
  • Low-energy heating and lighting designed around the original fabric
